Their new cookbook, Southern Living Heirloom Recipe Cookbook: The Food We Love from the Times We Treasure, is filled with time honored recipes that could have come from any family. The “Memorable Mains” chapter is full of centerpiece dishes passed down and loved by generations of Southerners: have your chickenDixie FriedorBarbequed, KievorA La King,or whip upShrimp DestinorCrispy Fried Catfish. A bunch of one-dish favorites for family dinners and potlucks are featured in “Covered Dish Classics” likeCheesy Chicken Tetrazzini, Shepherd’s Pie, Crab Imperial,and of course no cookbook of Southern classics is complete without a foolproof recipe forOld-Fashioned Chicken and Dumplings topped with chopped hard-boiled egg and parsley.
I especially love the”Larder” chapter at the end that is all about pickles, jams, jellies, and preserving the bounty of the Southern garden. If you have a passion for Southern food, this is a great book to add to your collection. It really is filled with a host of classic Southern recipes and old-fashioned treats.

Crusty Broiled Tomatoes – Southern Living Heirloom Recipe Cookbook

Ingredients
- 4 medium tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper
- 6 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 cup soft fresh breadcrumbs
- 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
Preheat broiler with oven rack 5 1⁄2 inches from heat. Cut tomatoes in half. Spread cut sides with mustard; sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and red pepper.
Place tomato halves on oven rack. Combine butter, breadcrumbs, and cheese. Spoon crumb mixture on top of each tomato half.
Broil 2 minutes or until crumbs are golden brown and tomatoes are thoroughly heated.
Notes
To boost flavor, toss breadcrumbs with finely chopped fresh basil or your favorite fresh herb.

My grandmother made stewed potatoes.And I make them to this day.Simple and are wonderful for any kind of meal.I also loved her fried apple pies & bread pudding with a sweet white sauce.I doctor up my white sauce with orange extract.

Gosh, there are several precious recipes I have. The current one I adore is my dear MIL’s Yellow Squash Casserole. I was a cook before marrying my husband 23 years ago, but this was something unique, and it wowed me the very first time I tasted it.

I called them hush puppies when I was little (oh yeah, we’re not from the South so they are not really hush puppies!) but they were a buttery potato dish that my mom made when I was little. I loved those potatoes!

That is a hard one! Too many favorites from which to pick. One that I really love is pork chop casserole served with black-eye peas and cornbread cooked in an iron skillet.

What would be a fabulous left over would be hollowed out tomatoes filled with left over macaroni and cheese topped with little bread crumbs with Parmesan cheese. Even a few cooked bacon crumbles Heavenly!!!

My grandparents made lefse, a common good in Norway – which is where my grandpa was from. I have very fond memories of helping them make it . . . And eating it! I now enjoy making it with my own daughter. I’d love to win a copy of the Southern Living cookbook!!!

Our favorite heirloom recipe would be my grandmothers Corny Cornbread. The moistest inside with a crusty outside from an iron skillet….divine .

My favorite passed down recipe is my moms tomato and rice soup, which she got from her grandmother. Yummy!

My grandmother’s sour cream sugar cookies are my favorite. My grandmother would bake and decorate a batch of these cookies for each of her children’s families every year as part of their Christmas present.

I come from a long line of good cooks, so I have a lot of favorites to choose from. My Baldwin County granddaddy’s gumbo comes to mind, as does my grandmother’s baked banana pudding with meringue. My other grandmother baked a mean strawberry cake that I still miss today, and my husband’s grandmother was known for her creamed corn and field peas, straight out of the garden.

Those tomatoes look amazing! We have a homemade lasagna recipe and a chicken tetrazzini recipe that has been passed down. They are 2 of my favorite recipes!
