description

“James Kellaway Colling (1816–1905) was an English architect, watercolor artist, and renowned book illustrator. He was one of the early pioneers of chromolithographic printing, an early method of producing multi-colored prints. Originally trained as an engineer, Colling eventually took an interest in architecture and became a master of architectural printmaking. He worked as a teacher of architectural printmaking for many years, and eventually began to received commissions to design civic and religious buildings. His architectural illustrations remain some of the greatest collections of medieval architecture that survive today. The present work, Details of Gothic Architecture is Colling's second published work, and contains magnificently engraved plates of gothic ornaments and elevations from some of the most notable examples of church buildings in Colling's own country.”
