I don’t make bacon often because of the mess it makes all over me, my stove and walls. After visiting my sister in Alaska, I no longer dread making bacon. She, like many others, cooks her bacon in the oven and has been making it this way for over 20 years.

For this Sunday brunch we made Applewood-Smoked Bacon – my favorite!

As of today, I no longer fear and dread the mess of making bacon. When we have our next Sunday brunch, I promise to have a plate full of perfect crispy bacon on the table.

Directions

  • *Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Place oven rack in center of oven. Lay slices of bacon side-by-side in a single layer in a pan with a lip- jelly roll pan, roastingpan, cookie sheet. If you are cooking a lot of bacon, it’s okay for the bacon slices toslightlyoverlap (see second above). For easier clean-up, you can line your pan with foil.
  • Cook forapproximately15 to 20 minutes and then check yourbacon. If cooking thin slices of bacon, check sooner,between10 to 12 minutes. Cookingtimes will vary depending on the thickness of your bacon and how crispy you like it. If necessary and for even cooking, you may need to flip your bacon once using tongs- this depends on the thickness of the bacon.
  • Once bacon is golden brown and has reached desired crispness, remove with tongs and place on platter lined with paper towel. Enjoy!

Cleanup

Allow grease to cool. Never pour bacon grease down the drain. Pour cooled grease in a heat-proof container andrefrigerateto save for cooking later ordiscard in trash. If using foil, allow the grease to solidify and then gently fold and toss in trash.

Tips

  • *Some methods for cooking bacon in the oven say NOT to preheattheoven, others say to preheat the oven. My sister has tried bothmethods over the years and prefers to preheat.
  • Be sure to keep an eye on your bacon while cooking. Once it starts to brown, it can go from crispy to burned fast.
  • For a quicker clean-up, you can line your baking pan.
  • If you are cooking thin slices of bacon, check your bacon sooner, between 10 to 12 minutes. You will mostlikelynot need to flip the bacon.

**Many people have left comments on Facebook stating for even less mess, reduce your oven temp to 350 degrees F. I reduced the temperature as recommended while staying in cabin rental over the holidays – there was zero mess. Zero. The bacon took a little longer to cook, but turned out perfect. At home I cook bacon at 400 degrees. without any issues. Each oven cooks differently, If you notice a lot of splatter, try reducing your oven temp.

I’ve been baking in the oven for a couple of years now. I bought 3 splatter screens at the Dollar tree and took off the handles (plastic) so that it was just the round screen. I lay them over the sheet pan and get no splatters. I move one of the splatter screens when I check the bacon…If its done to come out then all the splatter screens come off and head to the dishwater when they cool. If the bacon isn’t quite done yet, then that one screen goes back and everything goes back into the center of the oven for a little longer.

I start out my bacon at 350° on a rack inside a foil lined pan. After 10- 12 min. l flip the bacon over and cook another 10-12min.I then raise the temperature to 425° for 6 min. on each side. Remove from oven & brush with honey , maple syrup or combination of both. Add fresh ground pepper & place under broiler for 2-3 min. per side depending on how crispy you like your bacon. This is done with thick sliced bacon & l cook the entire package. When it cools completely l somewhat stack the pieces on parchment paper, roll them up & tuck the ends in. Place into large zip freezer bag. When u want to use it, pull out what you need and heat briefly in microwave. Great for making quick BLT’s when in a time crunch.

If you put a cookie cooling rack in the pan and put the bacon on top of that there will be even less mess and reduced grease in your bacon.

Put on foil lined pan. All you do is roll up the foil when cooled. No mess. I sprinkle Jack Daniel’s Seasoning on the top before baking at 350

I make my bacon in the oven too. Try using your broiling pan for this. The bacon never sits in the grease and the pan can hold the grease of over two pounds of bacon.
