Wicked Witch co*cktail

What is a Halloween party without witches and co*cktails? Entertain your coven this spooky season with this tasty bourbon co*cktail. Make a large batch of it to serve from a cauldron and your guests will be cackling with delight!

And if you have little witches or witches that can’t drink and fly, then I’ve got a mocktail alternative that you can brew up just for them.

Ingredients used in this co*cktail

To make a Wicked Witch you will need the following ingredients:

  • Bourbon – see my notes below
  • Blood Orange Liqueur – The brand Solerno is made in Sicily with blood oranges. Cointreau also have blood orange stating that it is “the perfect balance between sweet, bitter and blood orange peels”
  • Pomegranate Juice – use good quality juice such as POM which is 100% pomegranate.
  • Lemon Juice
  • Ginger Beer – see my notes below
  • Fresh Mint – for garnish

Bourbon

Bourbon is a whiskey, but not all whiskeys are bourbon… confused? Don’t be!

Simply put, bourbon is produced in America. It is made by distilling grains that must contain at least 51% corn – the rest being barley, and rye or wheat – an aged in new charred oak barrels; whereas whisky (Scotch) or whiskey (Irish) is made with malted barley.

Bourbon brands include Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, and Knob Creek.

But honestly, if you’ve got a bottle of Jack Daniels in the house or even a bottle of Scotch or Jameson’s Irish Whiskey, you can use that in place of bourbon and it’ll be just fine!

Ginger Beer

Ginger beer is a naturally sweetened and carbonated, usually non-alcoholic beverage. It is produced by the natural fermentation of prepared ginger spice, yeast, and sugar. In the UK there is a brand of alcoholic ginger beer – Crabbies – and is called“alcoholic ginger beer”to distinguish it from the more established commercial ginger beers, which are not brewed (fermented), but carbonated with pressurized carbon dioxide.

Not to be confused with ginger ale which is a carbonated soft drink flavoured with ginger. It is consumed on its own or used as a mixer, often with spirit-based drinks.

How to make a Wicked Witch co*cktail

This Halloween co*cktail is shaken, but don’t worry if you don’t have a co*cktail shaker, you could just use a container with a tight-fitting lid – like a mason jar, water bottle, or even the cup on a blender or smoothie maker.

All of the ingredients, bar the ginger beer, go into a co*cktail shaker with ice and then shaken vigorously until combined. Pour into a glass over ice and top with ginger beer. Garnish with mint leaves and enjoy!

Wicked Witch co*cktail Variations

I always like to try and give variations on the co*cktails I share on The Purple Pumpkin Blog, and especially turning the co*cktail into a mocktail so that non-drinkers and kids can enjoy the drink too!

Virgin Wicked Witch (Mocktail)

To turn the original alcoholic co*cktail into a non-alcoholic mocktail we can make some simple sWitches!

For adults: Shake together: 1 oz blood orange syrup with 2 oz pomegranate juice and ½ oz lemon juice. Pour into glass and top with (non-alcoholic) ginger beer.

I love the Monin brand of syrups as there are lots of flavors and they are a very versatile ingredient that can be used in co*cktails, mocktails, coffee, cocoa, shakes, smoothies, and more.

For kids: In a glass, mix 2 oz orange juice, 1 oz pomegranate juice, and top up with lemon-lime soda, or if they like the flavor, (non-alcoholic) ginger beer.

Frozen Witch co*cktail

Want to turn a Wicked Witch into a frozen slushie? Easy! Put all the ingredients in a blender with a generous amount of crushed ice – then blend till smooth. Serve with a straw, and watch out for brain freeze!

You could do this with the mocktail versions too.

Wicked Witch Coven Punch

If you want to make this wicked beverage for a crowd, you can make a large batch of the co*cktail no problem!

As long as you use the same measuring container (glass, cup, jug etc) for the “1 part”, the ratios will be correct and you can make as much as you need to. Serve in drinks dispensers, pitchers, or go really retro and serve it from a punch bowl!

To make a batch of Wicked Witch Coven Punch, mix together:

  • 1½ part Bourbon
  • 1 part Blood Orange Liqueur
  • 1 part Pomegranate Juice
  • ½ part Lemon Juice
  • Ginger Beer – add as much as you require to taste

Make sure you add plenty of ice to your serving receptacle of choice and add mint leaves, orange slices, and lemon slices for garnish.
